Apple Passwords

Free password manager built into iOS, iPadOS and macOS, with passkeys and autofill everywhere Apple software runs.

For anyone whose life runs on Apple hardware, the free Passwords app now built into iPhone, iPad and Mac is enough for most people. It fills logins across Safari and apps, generates strong passwords, handles passkeys and two-factor codes, and syncs through iCloud with no extra cost or setup.

It works on Windows through an iCloud extension but is clearly happiest in the Apple world, and it lacks the richer sharing and organisation of the dedicated tools. If you never leave Apple's ecosystem, it is the easiest option of all: the one you already have.

Pros

  • Free and built into iOS, iPadOS and macOS
  • Fills logins across Safari and apps
  • Handles passkeys and two-factor codes
  • Syncs through iCloud with no setup

Cons

  • Clearly happiest inside the Apple ecosystem
  • Windows access needs an iCloud extension
  • Sharing and organisation are thinner than dedicated tools
