Shopify

Ecommerce platform that handles payments, inventory and shipping, the default choice for selling products online.

If the site's main job is selling, Shopify is the answer. It handles the whole business of a store, products, payments, shipping, tax, inventory and a huge marketplace of apps, far more thoroughly than the ecommerce add-ons bolted onto general builders. It scales from a first sale to a serious operation without a replatform.

For a simple brochure site it is overkill and overpriced, and the monthly fee plus transaction costs add up. But for a real online store, the other builders are compromises and Shopify is the tool built for the job.

Pros

  • Handles products, payments, shipping, tax and inventory
  • A huge marketplace of apps
  • Scales from first sale to serious operation
  • Far more thorough than bolted-on ecommerce

Cons

  • Overkill and overpriced for a brochure site
  • Monthly fee plus transaction costs add up
  • Less design freedom than a general builder
